April Chapter Meeting and Breakfast Presentation with Dr. Bob Buchanan on: Do Women Like to Work for a Female Boss.
Summary: The glass ceiling is typically envisioned in a gendered context as limited upward mobility of females in organizations, perpetuated by males with a ‘boys club’ mentality. However, what if mobility is also hindered by subordinate relationships between women? Anecdotally, we find managers afraid to promote a female team member, for fear that the other girls won’t work for her. Our research finds that women feel females are good managers, but they don’t actually want to work for one. Oddly, the effect was more pronounced with higher number of years in the work force. In fact, men were generally more receptive to a female boss than were women. Suggestions are presented on how to ameliorate the impact of what we discovered as a ‘hidden bias,” and has been termed the ‘pink ceiling.’
